A judge recently prohibited Dame Dash from minting and selling Reasonable Doubt as an NFT. Now, JAY-Z has announced his own NFT inspired by his debut album.

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of his debut album Reasonable Doubt, JAY-Z has announced his own NFT inspired by the album following his recent lawsuit against Dame Dash for his own Reasonable Doubt-related NFT.

In a press release from Sotheby’s, the auction house revealed that JAY-Z has commissioned artist Derrick Adams for “a one-of-one animated digital artwork that comments on and recontextualizes the album’s iconic cover,” which will be sold as an NFT.

“The one-of-one NFT titled Heir to the Throne, which was the original title of the album, is composed of a single animated digital image in which Adams creates a fresh and contemporary visual representation of Reasonable Doubt,” the press release states. “Featuring his singular aesthetic style of bright colors, geometric forms, multi-layered textures, and flat surface dimensions, Adams has made a cinematic visual experience that channels not just the spirit and impact of the music, but also the aspirational impulses of a young musician at the dawn of his career.”

Bidding for the NFT is now open online through July 2, with $1,000 being the starting price. JAY-Z’s own NFT announcement comes right as the artist and entrepreneur filed a lawsuit against Roc-A-Fella co-founder Dame Dash claiming that he was trying to mint and sell Reasonable Doubt as an NFT. Even though Dash has said that he never intended to sell the album as NFT — he said he was trying to sell his stake of Roc-A-Fella — a judge ruled in favor of JAY and Roc-A-Fella, prohibiting Dash from selling Reasonable Doubt as an NFT.
