Big News!!! There’s a new scholarship spearheaded by USC Annenberg and ViacomCBS to help HBCU graduate students pursuing a master’s degree in Journalism. The ViacomCBS HBCU Diversity in Journalism Endowed Scholarship will allow African American students to attend one of the top universities in the world for communications and media, while eliminating the tuition cost barrier to accelerate the diversity pipeline in newsrooms.

Gayle King, co-host of CBS This Morning, announced the new scholarship today at USC Annenberg’s virtual celebration for its Class of 2021. “This new scholarship demonstrates ViacomCBS and USC Annenberg’s commitment to elevating Black excellence in journalism as well as a tremendous investment in supporting the diverse representation we all seek in the industry,” King said.

  • Nationwide, African Americans only represent 7.12% of the overall salaried workforce among newsrooms, despite the fact that 1 in 3 African Americans say they have a lot of trust in the information they get from local news organizations. ViacomCBS and USC Annenberg recognize the critical need for African Americans in journalism to tell stories that connect and resonate with the community it serves.
  • By providing HBCU graduates with this opportunity to attend USC Annenberg cost-free, the university and ViacomCBS are actively fighting to create more opportunities for African American journalists to become leaders in a world where they are severely underrepresented.

The ViacomCBS HBCU Diversity in Journalism Endowed Scholarship will be available for HBCU graduates to apply starting May 13, 2021, for USC’s 2021-22 academic year. More information is available here.
